Feb 05,  · Spirit struck a careful balance between disciplined studio chops, jazz improvisation, and driving rock and roll. Guitar prodigy Randy California is an obvious standout, but the other instrumentalists are superb as well--John Locke's shimmering keyboards, Mark Andes' subsonic wall of bass, and Ed Cassidy's precision drumming/5().

NEW mid-line compact disc & Gram vinyl SPIRIT MODEL SHOP Ed Cassidy: We were very much a part of the avant-garde of the rock and roll scene. It was a very exciting time for us and at that time everything was pretty out-there! Spirit the groundbreaking L.A. combo equally swayed by moody jazz and Hendrix-style rock 'n' roll was born to record.

The set was also interesting given it included four Sprit rarities; 'Rock and Roll Planet', 'Looking Down', 'These Are Words' and 'Hollywood Dreams' (the latter wasn't a cover of the Thunderclap Newman song). The band also deserved kudos for avoiding the usual double album live set drollness.
